Are You Putting Too Much on Your Business Card?

First of all, if you have a box of business cards, you are not using them. Business card companies should be the most lucrative of all businesses because we should be replacing our supply of business cards monthly or bi-weekly. They are so low in cost per impression that we should be literally littering the world with them (don’t worry, they are biodegradable).

The card example above has the phone number "front and center", first so as to invoke the reader to first call. It then displays the website and email in case the reader wants more info or chooses to communicate via email. There is no physical address because the business may be done at the client's office or the business owner doesn't want to be contacted at a home business address, or for whatever reason. But, know that there is, or should be a "reason" for everything we do in marketing; and for what we place on our "mini billboards".

OK, on to today’s marketing tip. Yes, it has to do with business cards, but you can do the same with all of your advertising pieces and even your business as a whole.
Pull out your business card and look at it with “fresh eyes”; like it is the first time you’ve seen it. Imagine that you are the recipient who is trying to reach you. Is the font large enough to read easily (especially if your market is older), is all pertinent information included (zip code provided if the address is displayed). Include ONLY the contact information to reach you in the way that you want to be reached. Today everyone can get information via the Internet if they want to. If you want your phone to ring, don’t put anything other than your phone number on your cards. If you want them to go to your website, just put your website address on the cards. Place yourself in the shoes of one who is holding your card and wanting to contact you. Do you need to include every possible way for them to reach you on this small piece of marketing real estate or only the one or two ways that you want to be contacted?

You decide. You can always make more cards!

Things will always happen and the outcome is always how we respond to things that happen. Ter Scott, Life & Legacy Coach™

The week starts on Sunday so hopefully, you’ve set up your week last night in preparation for a great week. Or, you may choose early Monday a.m. to do so if that works better for you. Just know that you are in control of your life and your week.

Certainly, events will happen “outside” your control but when you are prepared you’ll roll with things more easily.

I know and confess that “I plan my way but God directs my path” and I believe that wholeheartedly. When I have my “quiet time” each morning and plan for success, this is continually confirmed in the things I read and what I view online.

One such thing is what I call my “color reveal”. (I’ll offer more on exactly what that is and how I use it in my other materials). I simply “choose” three colors for the week and “live” its meaning each day of the week. One of this week’s colors for me is the color “Coral”. This color states that “My life is easy and full of synchronicity. I follow the most divine path for me”. As I said above, this is just one way I received a “confirmation” that all will be well for me this week.

What would you like to say that you’ve accomplished when this Friday rolls around?

Will you be like the student in this conversation?

Friend: What’s your son taking up in college?
Father: Time.
Friend: No, I mean, what will he be when he is out?
Father: Older.

My Monday suggestion for both you and I this week is to write out 3 things we want to accomplish by Friday, look at it daily and then when something is completed before Friday, rejoice, celebrate and send up gratefulness and then continue to work on the other until all 3 is completed. Then on Friday (or Saturday as this is a “life’s week” and not just a “business’ week”) evaluate and congratulate… yourself and those who assisted you in attaining your weekly achievement!

What is the response rate for direct mail?

According to Direct Mail News, in 2012 the average response rate for direct mail was 4.4% for both business-to-business and business to consumer mailings—considerably higher than industry expectations, and surging past electronic mail's response rate of just 0.12%.Jun 13, 2013

The above information is several years old now so we can take it for what its worth. I was surprised also because I always thought that is was around 2 percent. Another surprising (but perhaps not so much when one thinks about it), it highly surpassed digital, electronic mail. Now to prove my point, let’s ask another question:

What is the response rate for direct mail with item inside?

My answer is, I’m not sure, but from what I found on the web, it is well over 50%. I’ll let you do your own research. Ask yourself about the times when you received an envelope with a certain “bulkiness” to it, something (what could it be?) was inside making the envelope bulge. You knew something was inside and you opened it, right? I can’t imagine anyone throwing something like this away without at least finding out what it was, can you? I remember receiving a bulky letter and on the inside I found a candy mint taped to the letter stating: “It doesn’t cost a mint to…”. You can do something similar with a penny or even two dimes and say “When I started I didn’t have two dimes to rub together. Even if this is your situation, I can help”. With an envelope that has a clear window with a real dollar bill showing certainly works well. If you haven’t used these ideas with your mailings lately, I suggest that you give it a try; you’ll be glad that you did because leads and sales ultimately result.

When someone opens the mailing piece and finds a mint or even a dollar bill, when they consume the mint (if they do) or use the dollar, do they “remember” you and your business? My answer is, “not likely”. So let me get to the “triple whammy” or “3 for 1” effect.

When someone opens your envelope because it is bulky, you’ve gotten farther than most people do with direct mail; that is #1. Now with whatever you’ve used for the bulkiness and how it relates to the contents so it is a memorable and relatable to the receiver will determine if the person takes action. If so, that is #2. Are you ready for #3, the one thing that truly gives you more “bang for your direct mail buck”, the thing that sets you apart from others who just do steps #1 and #2 which only yields the results of only doing #1 and #2; the something “extra” that may make the difference between failure or success?

Here it is. When you do this, I promise you that you’ll get results and add to the duration of time in which you get results. Include an imprint on the item which created the bulkiness. You could include a pen with your imprint, a coin that requires the recipient to come in to your store to redeem it, or even the mint I told you about earlier could have an imprint on the wrapper. However, my choice of item would be the pen or something similar which has an advertisement (your imprint is the ad) which would be seen for a longer period of time so your recipient is reminded to visit your business. The mint or coin has immediate impact but the imprinted item that offers prolonged use has the stronger and longer marketing impact.

So when you consider the cost (investment) of direct mail, my thoughts are to add a bit more time, thought and creativity in your mailing pieces along with an imprinted item; which will increase the cost but the overall positive income resulting from doing it this way will be well worth it.

Say Thank You with Imprinted Travel Mugs and 10% Goes to Charity

This week's Charity Promo: Travel Mugs and...

Ter’s Marketing Tip: Say Thank You.

OK, I hear some readers saying that this is common sense, but I will share what my friend Dexter Yager states which is: “common sense isn’t so common”. And I will go one step further to emphasize my point and ask you when was the last time you said the words “thank you” and/or when you did it was done with sincerity and intent?

So now that we agree that it is important to show our appreciation we need to ask ourselves some “good” questions. When I think of asking questions I think of the question system; take these and answer them: Who, What, When, How, and Why.

I will share a few of my (quick) answers to each but with you knowing your business; I’ve left 3 blanks for you to fill in with your answer.

Who? Prospects, New Customers, Current Customers, _______________ , _______________ , _______________ .

What? Imprinted Coffee Mug, Real Dollar Bill, Donation on their behalf, _______________ , _______________ , _______________ .

When? Payment of item, special purchase, milestone, _______________ , _______________ , _______________ .

How? Telling them, telling them in public or in the media, special notice sent to their home (instead of their business), _______________ , _______________ , _______________ .

Why (which should probably be our first question)? For giving referrals, for number of years doing business with our company, when we notice them in the news for doing something, _______________ , _______________ , _______________ .

I’ve always said in my marketing classes and now in my workshops and seminars, “Advertising is a noun; marketing is a verb”. Marketing requires your action. Taking a few moments to complete this “assignment” will garner results for your business almost immediately.

Easy Way to Create an USP

Does your business have and are you using a USP?

“What makes you so special?” When you can answer that, and tell people what your business offers, what sets it apart from others, and what you can and will do that will make them want to do business with you, you are then using your “Unique Selling Position” (USP).

Ter Scott’s three part marketing formula has always been: Know who you are, know what your business is, and tell others. You can market more effectively by knowing the “who, where, what, why and when” of your business; in a way that expresses it concisely and interestingly enough to attract customers and motivate them to purchase and keep them as loyal customers.

You know who you are and what your business does when you have created a vision and/or a mission statement. The next step is to tell people your USP in the form of a “headline”; a type of slogan that immediately follows your business name as it appears on your stationery, business cards, billboards, newsletter and website. When creating your USP be sure that you use good, keywords because today so much in marketing is being able to find your business online. Also consider how it “sounds” as it will probably be spoken in an audio ad. (Imagine hearing an announcer saying: “And this portion of the program is brought to you by: My Imprint Rep DOT com. “Anything With an Imprint at Lower Prices and Better Service. Is My Imprint Rep, your Imprint Rep? And by….”

Remember when creating your USP, to reflect on your own philosophy and life purpose (or that of the originator of the business if that is not you).Your USP could be about you, your business, your product or service, your employees, or all of the above. An example of a short USP is the one I used above that is for my business: www.myimprintrep.com. When “you” are the company and you are branding yourself as a speaker, consultant, etc. you may want to use a USP for your personal marketing efforts. Mine are "Ter Scott, The Bricks to Clicks Marketing Consultant", and “The Man of 100 Blogs”; both could probably be made better but hopefully people understand by this that as the Bricks to Clicks Marketing Consultant, for example, that I can understand them, and I can assist them in solving their situation.

The best known USP statements are probably still those by the originator of the idea back in the 1950s by Rosser Reeves as Wikipedia explains:

His ads were focused around what he called the unique selling proposition, the one reason the product needed to be bought or was better than its competitors. These often took the form of slogans — Reeves oversaw the introduction of dozens, some that still exist to this day, such as M&M's "melts in your mouth, not in your hand." He argued that advertising campaigns should be unchanging with a single slogan for each product. His commercials for Bic pens, Minute Maid orange juice, M&M's candies, Colgate toothpaste and other products used similar methods, often making dramatic demonstrations. READ MORE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosser_Reeves

Ideally, your USP should be concise enough to be used as a short sentence to follow your business name but it doesn’t have to be; it could be much longer but then your probably just repeating your vision or your mission statement. Dan Kennedy who, with his No B.S. Marketing philosophy, states that your USP should answer: “Why should I, a prospective customer, do business with you, over any and all other options that I have out there which also include doing nothing?”

Invest some time in creating your USP. It will not only give your business the competitive edge over your competition. Would you like more assistance in creating an effective USP for your organization or business? Visit www.terscott.com/contact and inquire.

Marketing on Call Bonus Assigment: Do Mystery Audits for Bestmark

In our Marketing on Call, you’ll get optional assignments such as this one. Why not take this one for a “test” drive (literally) and see some of the kind of things we’ll be doing. Bestmark is a great company that does secret audits of automobile dealerships (and some other companies).

Learn to market by "doing"- and get paid!

By seeing how companies evaluate customer service teaches one to do so and become a better consultant to his or her clients. I enjoy being an evaluator or a mystery shopper because I learn about businesses every time I do an audit. I now work with a select few companies because my time is limited. What's cool is before I speak in an area, or travel anywhere for business or pleasure, I first check to see if there is a "shop" available in the area I'll be at. If so, I sign on for it and this gives me a little pocket money as well. Some shops only take about 15 minutes; others maybe 45. They are all fun and I usually learn something from each. Obviously certain things are confidential, but I can pass on things of a "general" nature to my clients and use what I've learned with my experience in my consulting.

Bestmark is a company that I've worked with for years. They are very professional and pay on time, etc. Check them out here:

What is "Penvertising"?

Penvertising is a marketing word coined by yours truly which is the act of advertising with imprinted pens.

The really is an art and science in marketing with imprinted products and pens especially. Much goes into the act of writing ad copy for your pen, how much copy to use, what copy to use and even the layout of your pen, the colors of your pen and so much more.

If you want to know more about penvertising, please contact me at my contact page on my site: www.terscott.com.

Building a Good Foundation to Market Your Business Starts with the Originator.

MONDAY MARKETING MINUTE

Before I share this, let me tell you that if you are not registered as a "follower by email" that you are definitely missing out; do so before leaving this page. Also bookmark this page and get back here frequently for reference. I will tell you right now that what you are reading in these articles will later be published and for sale at your local bookstore where others will pay a lot to get what you are getting here at no cost. Also, this material will be presented and sold at my day long workshops where attendees will pay $1000 and up. So, enjoy!

There are no short cuts in doing a good job with anything; even with your marketing. One must build a good marketing foundation to continually build upon as the business becomes a viable venture, meaning that it cash flows and the owner sees the expected results. From here it continues to meet and exceed the goals that have been set. I’ve seen where some businesses have survived by doing the day by day promotions and seasonal specials for a time, but ultimately businesses which succeed are those which are run from a plan which is used as a track to run on and a road map to future growth and earnings.

Everything starts with the originator of the business and it grows from there. The business starts with an idea by the originator and a plan emerges to go forward in creating an organization. Because the business is the idea of the originator it follows that the philosophies, personality and everything about the person exists in the business. (This is why I ask the originator so much about his or herself when I create logos for businesses; because the created image used as a logo is, or should be, a reflected image of the idea, the thoughts, and wishes of the originator).

As the originator moves forward from the idea of the business, the thoughts and wishes for the originator’s dream must be conveyed (marketed) “to and through” everyone associated with the business which includes the internal customers (employees and staff) and the external customers (those benefited when purchasing the products and services). I’ve always been a fan of Dave Thomas who started Wendy’s. He started with an idea, conveyed it to and through everyone involved with the company and now, even after his passing, the company successfully continues with his original philosophies.

With the business being so tied to the originator’s thoughts, personality and wishes for its positive results, the originator must do some real soul searching; it all starts with the originator. After a business has been around for years and the originator has passed on, successors may sometimes rightly ask “What would (name of originator) have done?” Asking the question helps to keep everyone doing what was intended for the business.

Having a business is like having money; it simply amplifies who a person is. If a person is a “good” person, he or she will have a “good” business. If a person is not “good” or “liked” the business will not be “good” or “liked”. Again, everything starts with and is the reflection of the originator. So, do you want to own a business that strives and continues to grow to success? You then need to be a person who thrives and continues to grow to success; personally. The originator and the business are one and the same.

In a future article I will touch a bit on knowing who you are, what you want to do, how you want to do it, and how long you want to take to get there. That’s marketing.
